Persephone Teaser Tuesday (and prize)

In honour of Persephone Reading Week and seeing as it's Tuesday, quote a couple of spoiler-free sentences from the Persephone book you’re currently reading to tempt others. Once you have then link to that post in comments and Verity and I will then judge the post that teases us the most and reward you with Few Eggs and No Oranges by Vere Hodgson! If you do not partake in Teaser Tuesdays on your blog then feel free to post a one-off below and we'll include it in the prize giveaway.

"We were rich too in another way, richer, so far as I can observe, than the average children of to-day. Our parents had accumulated a large number of books, which we were allowed to browse in as much as we liked."
A London Child of the 1870s by Molly Hughes p. 7

I'll do anything for a chance to win a book!!

I don't normally participate in Tuesday Teaser so here is a passage from The Victorian Chaise - Longue by Marghanita Laski

"There was a moment's waiting, and then Lizzie's heavy steps came up the stone stairs, along the passage and into the room. Now curiosity forced open Melanie's eyes, and she saw Lizzie come past her couch, holding at arm's length a black kitchen-shovel on which burned red embers."

Jackie, thanks for participating and fabulous choice of passage!
We wanted to leave this competition open to everyone -those who teased or not- so thanks for getting the ball rolling.

What a great quote. Growing up I loved that my parents and grandparents had books around the home...they did make home cozy and interesing. All the ways in which one can define life as rich and not mean money...with books the possibilities are endless.

p.s. I got few eggs for the challenge, so I want to post some quotes later today from Miss Buncle's Book but no need to enter me in the giveaway.

This is my first Teaser Tuesday, I'd never heard of it. Feel free to be teased. I'm reading Cheerful Weather for the Wedding http://leaningtowardthesun.wordpress.com/2009/08/25/persephone-teaser-tuesday/
(p.s. I have a copy of Few Eggs on the way to me, so don't enter me in the drawing, just wanted to play along!)

"Meeting Miss Buncle in the street, Mr Abbott (who was rather a connoisseur of feminine charms) would not have looked twice at her. A thin, dowdy woman of forty - he would have said (erring on the unkind side in the matter of her age) and passed on to pastures new. But here, in his sanctum with the knowledge that she had written an amusing novel, he looked at her with different eyes."

'Miss Buncle's Book' by D. E. Stevenson (p. 14)

A teaser from Saplings:

"To both Laurel and Tony that sentry was the most memorable part of the day. He left them excited and yet with a cold feeling in their stomachs. Anything might happen in a world where sentries turned you back in country lanes. Before, war at home was hearsay, now it was real. It was as surprising as if the ground under their feet had begun to shake, or cats had voices and could talk."

I'm seriously in love with this book.

Thank you so much for the teasers, Book Psmith, Danielle, Cristina and Ana! I am sorely tempted to read Miss Buncle's Book and Saplings later this week...

Jackie, remember too that every comment you make each day on both of our welcome posts enters you into our daily prize draws for Good Evening, Mrs Craven!

Book Psmith, I love houses with a lot of books and can lose myself in just looking at them.

From Mariana by Monica Dickens:

Aunt Winifred did not speak much, but when she did, she often got straight to the heart of the matter in one simple, penetrating remark. When Julia had gone wandering away, bored with the grown-ups, Winifred said, "Child wants a good spanking."

coops, great teaser! I like "Child wants a good spanking"; it makes me laugh.
