The Pink Shelf

Purely for the photo-op but isn't this shelf striking? I'm not sure if my head would hurt having this as a permanent fixture although I do love purple and pinks.

On the pink shelf are a handful of Virago Modern Classics; some more Angela Carter; some seminal LGBT fiction; some erotica; some fairy tales secondary material; children's literature; and also literary and contemporary fiction.

Next week, we have the blue shelf.

I love Armistead Maupin, seminal indeed.

I'm now intrigued by The Tortilla Curtain - great title!

Amistead Maupin is fabulous; I love the Tales of the City series so much.

coops, I haven't read The Tortilla Curtain yet but think TC Boyle is a wonderful writing and he has covers that could easily fit on every coloured shelf!

Not keen on pink, much too girly. Looking around the study, I can't see any pinks here!

Tony, I thought the same myself! It would actually work better as a bedroom shelf for me than a living room one. I actually noticed some correlation between colour and publisher - you'll see on the shelf a number of Virago Modern Classics and I wondered whether it was at all intentional.

I LOVED The Tortilla Curtain...but haven't seen one with a pink spine before!

The UK overs of Boyle's books are great, JoAnn! Check out the one for Drop City! That actually has a pinker spine but I don't have my copy here.

Sorry - I'm not a fan of the pink shelf - it is too bright! There are some great books on there though.

Jackie, I love pink but it is too bright; thank goodness I don't live with it - my eyes would hurt! If I ever do colour-order all of my books then I would try to tone down the pink some. I like how eye-catching it is and, yes, there are definitely some great books.

Love the pink shelf and have actually got a few books from it. Love Maupin and how spooky our blogs both i some way feature The Bastard of Istanbul! Curious!

Simon, our posts were coincidentally in synch in one part; it is indeed curious when that happens - perhaps a sign that you should read the book soon!

This shelf just screams "teen girl" to me! ;) I know I would have had a similar shelf (in colour, not content) when I was a young girl... oh who am I kidding? I wish I had it now!

Paperback Reader said...

Steph, it does completely embrace my inner teenage girl! I should have had a Judy Blume or two on it.

It looks like neon! Lol. Seriously, though, I'd love to get my hands on Unaccustomed Earth and Kitchen, your UK editions. As the design of the North AMerica editions of those two I don't really like.

I'm waiting for the blue shelf, as it is my fave colour!

Paperback Reader said...

It is neon-like, Claire!

Unaccustomed Earth is a new acquisition and it's such a lovely cover :).

The blue is quite bright too and, like the pink, I ordered it so that the colour gradated into a lighter shade.

WOW! That's exactly what I said when your photo popped up, very striking Claire.

Thanks, Darlene!

I love your color coded shelves, but I would be lying if I didn't admit that I was mental alphabetizing your pink shelf. I would love to get all of those Angela Carters next to each other. But alas, that would ruin your scheme.

Thomas Hogglestock said...

Oops, typo. Should be: "mentally alphabetizing..." Of course, not being able to put them in order does make me a bit mental.

Paperback Reader said...

Don't worry, Thomas, the pink shelf is purely for the photo-op and I have an Angela Carter shelf. I too like all my books by the same writer to be together, which poses a problem if I ever do colour-etise all of my shelves.

LOVED that as pink and purple are my favourite colours. I want to do one too!

Paperback Reader said...

Looking forward to seeing yours, Verity! I imagine you have a few more than me.

Oh I know a lot of girls who'll just go crazy for this one. Talk about Pink Power :)

Mark David said...

Oops! My comments got tangled up. Sorry! Can I just post it again on the right page and maybe you could delete the one right here if you like.

Though of course it's only normal for a guy like me not to be crazy about pink, I'm a supporter of strong-willed girl power. So you go girl :)

Paperback Reader said...

Mark, it's definitely a girl power shelf with some great feminist writing on it too. Strong-willed feminism is the way to go although I am also just a girl who loves pink! "Pink is my signature colour".

No problem about the comments; I've done it myself when I have a number of posts open at once.

Mark David said...

Yeah, that's what happened. Two posts open at a time...

Oh, and by the way, pink is pretty, so I totally understand why girls really dig it :)

Sarah said...

Woah! That is really pink. Four pink spines om my shelves and that's it. Though for sheer intensity Generation X should probably score extra points...

Paperback Reader said...

Not all girls... but some of us really like the pretty.

Hi Sarah, I have that copy of Generation X! It's at my parents' though and hence not on that shelf; it is very intense.
