"Metamorphosis"
Why have I not read any Kafka until now? Truth be told, I thought he was as literary high-brow and as inaccessible as Proust, Joyce, Dante (not to say that I won't read Proust, Joyce or Dante at some point as I want to but previous attempts have failed); I was, however, wrong.
From the famous opening line, "As Gregor Samsa awoke one morning from uneasy dreams he found himself transformed in his bed into a gigantic insect", Franz Kafka's short story "Metamorphosis" is both accessible, intelligent and enjoyable. First published in 1915 this entomological tale is surprisingly modern and simultaneously timeless. Flippant and simple the short story is tragic from its wonderful opening line above to its cyclical conclusion, where Gregor's sister Grete has also metamorphosed in a young woman.
Gregor Samsa, a travelling salesman who financially supports his parents and younger sister, wakes from nightmares to find he has become the Samsa beetle (coined by Vladimir Nabokov) but retains his own thought processs, which is at casual odds with the phsyicality of the beetle. It is interesting to observe this thought process deterioriate; Gregor remains himself within the grotesque form and his bias does not allow him to understand and appreciate that he is not the same as he was to his family. His perception of his family's words and actions in their shocked, disgusted and mourning state is darkly humorous. Gregor sees them through his own mind's eye, he even closes his eye-lids but beetles have no eye-lids; his family see only the monstrous beetle. It's a very scientific approach: what we see is informed by our brain, not our eyes themselves.
If this is Kafkaesque then I had nothing to be scared of and I am excited to discover such great writing; I look forward to experience more (albeit limited) Kafka in the future.

Seven Days of Reading...
I love the language of Gabriel Garcia Marquez; I love his wordiness. There are few writers whose work I find celebrate language, literary language, as much as he does although Angela Carter and Salman Rushdie readily come to mind; each of these three writers plays with language, each story tell and each, it has been said, write magical realism.
Anyway, I missed Marquez. I own most of his novels, novellas and short stories but haven't read them all as yet; I like to savour his canon. 100 Hundred Years of Solitude I read and adored about a decade ago and think it is time for a re-read soon (I have a hopeless retention for books and barely remember parts) and in 2007 I read a few of his works: Memoirs of my Melancholy Whores (of which Love in the Time of Cholera greatly reminds me in parts), Chronicle of a Death Foretold (perfection), Of Love and Other Demons (also very good) and his not-so-very-short story "The Incredible and Sad Tale of Innocent Erendira and Her Heartless Grandmother", which is by far one of the best short stories I've read by any author (excluding Angela Carter); it really is an incredible title story and along with Chronicle of a Death Foretold, is a rich sample of beautiful and perfected writing. After a break of more than a year it was time for some more Marquez and although aesthetically -on the page- pleasing and enjoyable, Love in the Time of Cholera was not as exquisite as his other works, I am sad to say. It is read though and contributes to my plan to read all of his work and to the 1000 Must Read Books challenge.
If you are only going to read one of Marquez's works (why would you do that though?) then I recommend Chronicle of a Death Foretold. Love in the Time of Cholera was too dense in parts, even turgid, although there were passages of infinite joy and I was enchanted by the more than half a century long love Florentino Ariza holds for Fermina Daza.
I read Love in the Time of Cholera over seven days and although I don't regret reading it I want to offset my book footprint by reading seven books over the next seven days.

Books Worth Reading for the Covers Alone
The title of this blog is slightly tongue-in-cheek; it's not a philosophy I would advocate, to buy books solely based on their covers, but Persephone Books are incredibly pretty and make a welcome addition to any bookcase. Above you will see an image of my burgeoning Persephone collection, both the original dove-grey covers and the new Classics range (printed, in part, to appeal to non-Persephonites, in other bookstores). The one, solitary title on top normally sits behind but will move to a new shelf once my collection grows some more.
I don't believe that one imprint can fully satisfy all of their readers with each book they produce but Persephone are close to it; they only re-publish "neglected masterpieces" that they themselves enjoy and I do think that the passion they have for these books is well-founded. Of the Persephones I have read (below are a list of the ones I own, but not all of them have been read yet) I have enjoyed them all.
#2 Mariana, Monica Dickens (in the Classic format)
#3 Someone at a Distance, Dorothy Whipple (also a Classic edition)
#6 The Victorian Chaise-longue, Marghanita Laski
#16 Saplings, Noel Streatfield
#21 Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Winifred Watson (Classic)
#24 Family Roundabout, Richmal Crompton
#28 Little Boy Lost, Marghanita Laski (Classic)
#41 Hostages to Fortune, Elizabeth Cambridge
#53 Lady Rose and Mrs Memmary, Ruby Ferguson
#56 They Were Sisters, Dorothy Whipple
#63 Princes in the Land, Joanna Cannan
#71 The Shuttle, Frances Hodgson Burnett
#73 The Young Pretender, Edith Henrietta Fowler
#78 A Very Great Profession, Nicola Beauman (Persephone's founder)

1000 books
Last month The Guardian published a one-week supplement of 1000 novels you must read (I assume, before you die, as in the book of the same name although that has one additional book in its compilation...) The problem with lists is that they are seldom concise and, of course, this list only features books so you have countless pieces of literature in short story, poetic and dramatic form omitted; otherwise, the list is a good one and features a lot of my favourite books and many I consider must reads myself. If I've tallied up correctly I have made 16.5% headway on the 1000 books, own several more and if I fulfill the challenge I am setting myself here, I will have read 20% of the list by the end of the year. In easier terms: I am going to read at least 35 of the books below. The 165 I have read are highlighted in bold, the titles in green are the ones I already own, some of which I intend -and desperately want- to read (most of them are photographed above), and the titles in purple are some of those I really want to obtain over the next eight months and read (this will probably change but they are my current temptations and have languished unbought on my Amazon wishlist for some time) as part of the 35. eta: when I have read any on the list I will score out the title from now on to keep track of the 35 I intend to read this year.
